This Shlak, for $1,000?
This painting was inspired by the book “Get the Picture” by Bianca Bosker. In the book the author makes it her job to understand the contemporary art world, as a non-artist, exploring what makes something “good” or “successful” and according to whom. Even though I am an artist, I still totally relate. Cuz sometimes, really wtf?!
When I was in college studying art, I felt like I never spoke the right language. Much of the work I was really proud of would get maligned in critiques while other work I found boring would be celebrated. I graduated feeling like I didn’t get it and had no business making art. Only after teaching art for nearly 10 years, supporting young artists and encouraging them to trust themselves and follow their own path, did I finally allow myself to do the same. As for “the art world” I still don’t really get it but I don’t really care either. I try to focus on what I do know, which is that I’m obsessed with making art.
original artwork is 18”x24”, watercolor and acrylic ink on Arches cold-pressed watercolor paper
